India is famous all over the world for its ancient temples and architecture. One of these is the Lepakshi Temple located in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. This temple is known for its amazing architecture, but its most famous feature is the “pillar hanging in the air” (Lepakshi Mandir Flying Pillar).

Yes, there is a pillar in this temple which is not situated on the ground but is hanging in the air. Let us know why this temple is so special and how this pillar is standing without being connected to the ground (Lepakshi Temple Mystery).

History of Lepakshi Temple

Lepakshi temple was built in the 16th century during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is believed that this temple was built by a person named Virupanna along with his brother, who worked for the king there. There is also a belief that this temple was built by sage Agastya.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Virabhadra, the fierce avatar of Shiva) and Lord Vishnu. It is said that the temple has a self-manifested Shivalinga, which is believed to be a form of Veerabhadra. The temple complex has many beautiful sculptures, carved pillars and frescoes, which are fine examples of Vijayanagara art.

Pole hanging in the air

The main hall of the temple has 70 pillars, out of which one pillar does not touch the ground. This pillar is slightly raised and a cloth or thread can easily pass under it. According to local beliefs, touching this pillar brings good luck to the person.

A lot of effort was made to know the mystery of this pillar floating in the air, but till date no one has been able to solve this mystery. The British also tried a lot to find out this mystery. A British architect gave a theory that the entire weight of this temple is on the remaining 69 pillars. Therefore, it does not matter if one pillar hangs in the air.

But when this theory was tested, something else came to light. On investigation, it was found that the entire weight of this temple is on this pillar. But still this pillar is not connected to the earth. After this, even the Britishers surrendered in front of the mystery of this temple.

By looking at this pillar, it can be assumed that this temple is a unique example of science and religious beliefs, seeing which everyone is surprised. There is also a statue of a huge Nandi, which is the vehicle of Lord Shiva, in this temple complex. The specialty of this statue is that it is made of a single stone and is one of the largest Nandi statues in India.
